Dad has never been conventional. He’s always had the courage, vision and determination to do his own thing, bucking both trends and popular opinion. We’re so grateful for him - our own Prince Lionheart - because from this strong character came the founding of our family’s company.
Unable to understand why he’d rather dabble in side jobs: waiting tables at night, mopping the UCLA medical center, chauffeuring Hollywood celebs, or selling beer he brewed in our bathtub - our Grandma wondered about the career her son was not pursuing with his newly earned MBA.
Dad was waiting. Waiting for that moment of inspiration he could grab hold of and pursue with reckless abandon. And that he did. With the last $400 to his name, he bought a bandsaw and some supplies, locked himself in our disapproving grandparents’ garage, and cut a pair of wooden rocking horses that Mom painted. PRINCE LIONHEART WAS BORN.
Prince Lionheart has remained family-owned and operated—honored to be a small part of the many families who buy our products.
We invent, design and manufacture right here in the US. But we won’t make just anything—we have to be able to make a product that matters, is safer, or is just plain better. Our passion and love of what we do is in the details. We don't do things simply for the bottom line; we do things because they're the right things to do.
We've committed our lives to creating products that make a difference to families all over the world: where the quality of the item outweighs the price you pay. We’re parents too. We know the challenges and we try to solve them as best we can.
We’ve come a long way from Grandma and Grandpa’s garage—expanding, but staying true to our beginnings. We have the honor of a brand, but the values of a family—our sense as business people and our sense as parents. Each new garage is a new place, but we’re the same family. The McConnells.
Prince Lionheart was started by Tom and Linda McConnell in 1973, in Tom’s parents’ garage. Since then, we have come a long way and have lasted all these years because we believe in family values. Family makes the world go ‘round, and running a company based on consistent family values, rather than variable shareholder motives, has allowed Prince Lionheart to remain true to itself and withstand the test of time.
Ever notice the best moments in life are rarely staged or scheduled? We try to be open to them whenever and wherever they choose to appear. Life is unpredictable. Embrace the moment and live each day. Well.
Single parents. Second marriages. Adopted kids. The definition of family has changed since our first rocking horse was made. To us, it’s all about how you treat people.
Game night, family dinner, riding bikes, road trip, movie time, stargazing, picnic in the park. Do something. Together.
We’ve never lost sight of the fact that our company started in a garage. While “our garage” has moved and expanded a few times over the years, we still consider ourselves a workshop brand: passionate, hardworking, not too proud, just roll up our sleeves and get it done.
If wild ambition came from Dad, we owe this one to Mom. Wabi-Sabi is the Japanese concept of finding appreciation in the authentic. Nothing is perfect, but Mom taught us there’s good in everyone and everything. You just have to have the right eyes to see it.
The things that may frustrate us today will become the stories we tell tomorrow. Find the positive. In everything. Especially parenting.
Since we’re a family business, we hold ourselves to a higher standard: our family’s standard. We’re guided by our values, and a good night’s sleep is the best indicator of how we’re doing.
Brush off the stumbles, reinforce the positives, and celebrate every “I did it” moment that marks the earliest stages of an adventurous life. It’s brave to try and it’s even braver to get back up.
Need we say more?
Given our history of inventing many “firsts,” – the first dishwasher basket, the first car seat protector (Seatsaver), the first Seatneat (the Seatsaver of dining chairs), the first roll-down car shade, the first baby view mirror, the first safety foam for table edges, first stroller connectors, first illuminated changing pad, first completely odorless diaper pail, first baby/toddler bath that becomes a storage bin, etc. – Prince Lionheart continues to invent, design, manufacture and patent its innovative products in the US and around the world. Innovation is a part of our family’s heritage and will remain a part of future Lionhearts for generations to come.
